Foot problems are common in people with diabetes. Self-care, starting with a daily foot exam, and medical intervention could help you prevent complications and even amputation.

Rod Davis, 47, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1976 and has always lived an active life of hiking and biking in the mountains near his Pueblo, Colorado, home. Rod credits exercise and proper foot care with keeping his feet healthy and ready to roll.

The main key to foot health is overall health, says John Giurini, D.P.M., associate professor of surgery at the Harvard Medical School and chief of the Division of Podiatric Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "Any complication of diabetes can be minimized by controlling your diabetes through diet, medication, and exercise."
