Information About Blood Pressure and Diabetes

High Blood Pressure: The Silent Health Threat

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a quiet danger. It doesn't exhibit outward symptoms. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder and can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries and eventual heart failure.

Having blood pressure checked regularly is important, especially for PWDs. You may need to advocate for blood pressure assessment and treatment, especially if you're seeing a health-care provider for various conditions. A recent study of PWDs served by primary-care physicians at Veterans Affairs facilities found that only half of the patients with elevated blood pressure received treatment changes during office visits.

Fortunately, there are things you can do, from what you eat to pills you take, to lower your blood pressure and ensure you receive proper treatment. On the next page, see what's effective in lowering blood pressure.
