What To Eat with Diabetes: Winning Ice Creams

The next time you're craving a bowl of ice cream, scoop up one of our 16 best consumer-tasted and dietitian-approved finalists or winners. We conducted blind taste panels for more than 100 people, including people with diabetes, and awarded the top-rated ice creams our Diabetic Living What to Eat seal of approval.

Taste-Tested & Diabetes-Friendly

Sure, you can select an ice cream that's lighter in calories. But if you also want it to taste great, the search isn't so easy -- until now. The Diabetic Living staff bundled up to brave the frozen foods section in search of ice cream and frozen yogurt (in vanilla and chocolate flavors) that met our diabetes nutritional requirements.

Nutritional Guidelines

Every ice cream tested had to meet these health requirements per 1/2-cup serving:

-- 150 calories or less

-- 5 g total fat or less

-- 3 g saturated fat or less

-- 0 g trans fat

-- 20 g carb or less (1 carb choice!)

-- 100 mg sodium or less

-- At least 8 percent DV of calcium

Light Vanilla Ice Cream Finalists

These ice creams were the top runners-up in the light vanilla ice cream category:

Taster's comment: "Yummy vanilla taste."

Finalist 2: Blue Bunny Premium Light Vanilla Ice Cream

Per 1/2 cup: 100 cal., 3.5 g total fat (2 g sat. fat), 15 mg chol., 30 mg sodium, 16 g carb., 3 g fiber, 2 g pro.

Taster's comment: "Light and airy but still filling."

Light Vanilla Ice Cream Winner

And the winner of the light vanilla ice cream category is:

Winner: Breyers Smooth & Dreamy 1/2 Fat Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream

Per 1/2 cup: 110 cal., 3.5 g total fat (2 g sat. fat), 10 mg chol., 50 mg sodium, 16 g carb., 0 g fiber, 3 g pro.

Taster's comment: "Super creamy and rich-tasting."

Why it won: The light vanilla bean flecks made this ice cream as gourmet looking as it tastes -- a great ice cream for 16 g carb per 1/2-cup serving.

Light Chocolate Ice Cream Finalists

These ice creams were the top runners-up in the light chocolate ice cream category:

Taster's comment: "Best chocolate flavor. Would never know it's low-fat."

Winner: Blue Bunny Hi Lite Chocolate Ice Cream

Taster's comment: "This tastes just like a Fudgsicle -- yum!"

Why it won: Tasters loved the creamy, real taste of this chocolate ice cream. At only 17 g carb per 1/2-cup serving, it's a sweet treat that can fit easily into your meal plan.

No Sugar Added Vanilla Ice Cream Finalists

These ice creams were the top runners-up in the no-sugar-added vanilla ice cream category:

No Sugar Added Vanilla Ice Cream Winner

And the winner of the no-sugar-added vanilla ice cream category is:

Winner: Edy's Slow Churned No Sugar Added Vanilla Ice Cream

Per 1/2 cup: 90 cal., 3 g total fat (2 g sat. fat), 10 mg chol., 70 mg sodium, 13 g carb., 2 g fiber, 3 g pro.

Taster's comment: "Good vanilla flavor. Can't even tell it's low-sugar."

Why it won: A low-calorie, low-carb option that tastes great, this ice cream has extra creaminess because of the slow-churning process.

Why it won: A light texture makes this ice cream melt right on the tongue, and 4 grams of protein is a nice bonus to this sweet dessert.

Taster's comment: "Tastes like my mom's homemade recipe and reminds me of old-fashioned custard."

Why it won: A zero-fat frozen yogurt that counts as 1 carb choice, this frozen yogurt was preferred because of its creaminess.
