What Are Carb Choices?

Q: I noticed in your magazine that you list carbohydrates in grams and carb choices. What are carb choices?

A: Some people with diabetes use carbohydrate or carb counting to manage their food intake and control their blood glucose. Carbs are what our bodies use for fuel. One carb choice is based on 15 grams of carbohydrates -- the amount in one slice of bread or 1/2 cup of cooked pasta. For people who use carb counting, this may be an easier way to keep track of their carbohydrates and adjust their insulin.

To calculate carb choices per serving, divide the total carbohydrate grams by 15.

A registered dietitian can help you determine how many grams of carbohydrates or carbohydrate choices you need each day and how to fit them in your meal plan.
