How to Fight Dry Skin
Q: My skin is extremely dry due to diabetes. It's flaky, itchy, and embarrassing. What's the best solution?
A: Having high blood glucose levels over time can draw fluids from your skin, causing it to become dry and irritated. What's most important in avoiding dry skin is to get and keep your blood glucose levels in control. Take this one step at a time.
Blood glucose control includes following a healthful eating plan, being physically active, and, for most people, one or more blood-glucose-lowering medications. Work with your health-care provider and diabetes educator to get your blood glucose under control. As you bring your blood glucose into better control, treat your dry skin by regularly applying lotion or cream to those areas. Also, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and be sure to use sunscreen, too.
