A Woman Who Wants to Lose Weight
The recommended carb range:
2-3.5 carb choices per meal
(30-55 g carbs per meal)
If you feel like you need a snack between meals, choose one that has less than 7-10 grams of carbohydrate per serving.
Carb Tip: Go for the carbs from fruits and veggies first. "For people who are wanting to lose weight, it's important to look at the balance between all of their nutrients. All carbs are not created equally, but carbs from whole foods such as fruit are much better choices than those from highly processed foods," says Donna Kernodle, R.D., M.P.H., CDE with the Diabetes Care Center at Wake Forest University's Baptist Medical Center.

8/13/2010 06:40:14 AM Report Abusemimi344 - great carb chart; how do I determine how many carbs I should eat each day? have been to nutritionist - didn't help much. e-mail: mac344@live.com
8/13/2010 06:37:37 AM Report AbuseThe American Diabetes Association prints "Month of Meals" books including ethnic versions, i.e. Mexican, Asian, Indian, etc. You can purchase direct from the ADA or from most book stores and in many grocery stores - usually near the pharmacy section if the store also has a pharmacy
8/7/2010 01:45:36 AM Report AbuseTo josephmalone, how did you find this info on dreamfiels pasta? You seem to know your way around "sugar spikes" Appreciate any info. denisesalome
7/28/2010 09:01:57 AM Report AbuseThis site makes no sense.I was told to eat 30-45 carbs for meals adn 15 carbs for snacks.I'm female, 5'2" &123 pounds. I got my info. from Kaiser Permanente. I strongly recommend their classes on diabetic nutrition, free to the public! They changed my attituded &my diet & I lost 20 pounds in a healthy manner. 7/27/2010 04:56:54 PM Report AbuseDrawn to carbs and find it hard at times to keep the servings in tack, love food what do you subsitute for the foodies?
7/9/2010 07:09:38 PM Report AbuseThis site is visually a mess. Can't read the "articles" because of all the "moving" ads as well as the stationary ones.
7/8/2010 06:53:46 AM Report Abuseladylovespsp: ur nutritonist sounds like she knows what she's talk'g about, that's what i learned in diabetic classes for myself, not everyone tho
6/20/2010 12:57:09 PM Report AbuseIt is hard to stay on a low-carb diet "forever" and once a person begins adding carbs back in to increase variety, s/he begins gaining back the weight. Better to have a meal plan that includes a variety of foods from all food groups, but is lower in calories to promote weight loss @ a healthy rate as well as provide adequate dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients that may be missing in a low-carb diet.
6/15/2010 04:13:28 PM Report AbuseI'm like anonymous ... I don't weigh enough ... but I don't do all that counting, I know what to eat and what not to eat, but to keep my weigh up, and it is hard. The best control I have found is walking, walking, walking.
5/10/2010 08:44:08 PM Report Abuseoops...this should have been written like this by me. no less and only a little more like 2g carbs if the meal runs that way, would be ok.
5/5/2010 05:38:58 PM Report Abusewith my type 2 diabetis, my nutritionist said to lose weight where I want to go and need to be, I should eat no more than 50g carbs for all 3 meals and 2 snacks of 15g carbs...no less and only a little like 2g carbs if the meal runs that way, would be ok. Following this daily will get me to my weight goal. Hopefully, that will work for me without wondering where spikes are going to happen with what foods I do enjoy eating. Seems like subtrating fibergs from carbgs food is asking for weight gain.
5/5/2010 05:37:29 PM Report AbuseMy dietician told me to eat three meals of 45 carbs each and two snacks of 15-30 carbs each. It has worked well for my Type 2 diabetes.
5/4/2010 12:13:18 PM Report AbuseThe latest research I've read says that obese diabetics do best on a low carb diet. why doesn't this site reflect that?
5/4/2010 11:29:22 AM Report AbuseI just was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and my doctor told me this schedule for carbs: 60 for Breakfast & Supper - 45 for Lunch & Snack. Of course you can cut back on some of the carbs if you like to help lose weight faster, but this diet has allowed me to lose 25 since last year and hopefully continue to keep losing. Hope this is helpful for some of you.
5/3/2010 07:34:19 PM Report AbuseThe best way to tell how many carbs you should take in is by testing, testing, testing! I disagree with much of what this web site has to say about the amount of carbs. Along with the ADA, even my doc. said it was time for them to get out of the dark ages. 50-60 carbs per meal is WAY to much, especially if you are trying to lose weight a well,
4/25/2010 12:21:08 PM Report Abuserlawlor262: Fruit is great for you but is tricky. While I may not get a sugar spike from an Orange, someone else may. You have to play around with it. Look up what fruits and veggies have the highest fiber content then start with say half a serving and see what it does to your sugar. For Anon: if your pasta has 41g carbs but 8g fiber then subtract the fiber from the carbs = 33g carbs. BUT - Dreamfield pastas use a special process and you only get 5g carbs per serving... so they are best to use.
3/15/2010 03:39:10 PM Report Abusegrhmgrls and skinnytoula: anything under 5g carbs would be considered free foods... anything around 15g (1 slice of bread for instance) is called 1 carb serving (macaroni w/sauce: macaroni(41g)+ sauce(15g)+ WW Bread(15g) = 71g/15= 5 carb servings)... the article DOES tell you how many carbs you should have - me, 60-75g carbs per meal or 4-5 carb servings. It's pretty easy once you figure out stuff like half a baked potato is 15g or 1 carb serving.
3/15/2010 03:31:41 PM Report AbuseI didn't find this article helpful, either. It doesn't tell me how many carbs I should be eating. I don't understand the slide.
3/13/2010 09:58:46 PM Report AbuseThis slide really isn't helpful because I don't understand about the Carb Choice. What if I am using a product that the total carbs are "0". Are you telling me that there is 15 grams of carb that I should use for this product? I am unemployed so I cannot afford to go to a RD so any help would be very appreciated.
3/12/2010 11:03:16 AM Report Abusebeing a type 2 diabetic should I limit the amount of fruit per day ?
2/23/2010 02:42:02 PM Report Abusehow many carbs are in this pasta, total carb43g,6g of fiber=? carbs
2/17/2010 12:34:18 PM Report AbuseI did not find this article at all helpful. You don't tell what foods fall into what catagory. You don't tell us anything we didn't know. example what foods fall into what catagory. Do a little more research on the subject and then write the article.
2/14/2010 11:26:33 AM Report AbuseThe best way to handle your diabetes is to learn all that you can about the diesase. That is what I had to do for my husband. Your doctor should be able to send you to classes that explain what and how much you can eat. We do not do it by exchanges but by carbs in each meal. For him 60 per meal with a snack. Women wanting to lose weight maybe 45 each meal with a snack if you want one. Best way to know is get informed. See your Doctor. Hope this helps.
