I am beating the diabetes, I don't sweat as much anymore, I don't fall asleep as often, even my sleep apnea has subsided without any treatment, and I have tons of energy. This was all done without adding exercise to the agenda or taking metaphormin or equivalent. You can do it too. I'll post some meal ideas next. Stay encouraged. E-mail me if you'd like to talk about it or hit me up on facebook. thelighthousecafe@yahoo.com

For a 1800 calorie diet, she had me limit my meat that I ate for the day down to 4-6oz. If I ate fish or seafood, I doubled the meat to 8-12 oz. I limited my carb count to 60g per meal, 15g for 3 snacks a day in between meals. I increased my protein intake and decreased my bad fats. This is hard at first but the results paid off.

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 6 months ago. I had had chronic stomach problems similar to IBS. They gave me metaphormin and my stomach got worse. I flushed the medicine and braved the better diet. I lost 30 pounds off the rip because I was eating not only smaller portions, but because I had balanced out my diet. So here's some of the things that my Diabetic Nutritionist had me follow, then I personalized the rest through research and help.

It's easy to say that artificial sweeteners are bad for you, but where is your supporting evidence? There is nothing wrong with them as long as they are in moderation.

Low fat yogurt has artificial sweeteners which are very bad for you. Instead, buy plain yogurt, add fruit, and the natural sweetener Stevia if it's not sweet enough.

There are so many things on here I know for a fact raise blood sugars in most diabetics, I wonder who did the research? Watermelon? It has a very high glycemic index (72) and it is listed as a "power food?" And yogurt? Even the lite ones have a ton of sugar. Graham crackers have a ton of sugar. Articles are contradictory to the research I have done.

I am really curious how you feel an apple is a "low carb" snack. What's your idea of low carb? To me a low carb snack should be 5g or less.

Would love to find a grain cracker that was not so sweet that I could buy for crackers and peanut butter snacks. I love soda crackers and peanut butter, but bought a grain cracker and it had a sweet taste instead of just a cracker taste. Anyone know of a brand that is not sweet.

if you NEED a snack, not just want something sweet, a lite yogurt (approx 12 grams carb) is a better choice than the 'carb smart' variety

Just recently learned I have Type 2 diabetes and it's a life changing experience. Been going to see a Registered Dietician regularly, started a new exercise program and watching my carbs is the toughest thing I have ever had to do, but I am doing it. I found Dannon has a new Carb conscience yogurt out. It come in a 4 pack in a variety of flavors and it tastes pretty good. Only 10 carbs per 5 oz container and is also on 50 calories, is a good thing when I want sweets as well.

I'm a Former Marine, Viet Nam War, learned I have type-two a month ago. Saw a dietitian/educator at the V.A. Was told to go to www.Calorie King.com. I purchased there suggested book "Calorie Fat & carbohydrate counter" at a local book store. It's a pocket size book for $7.50. I use it religiously, eat great and have a zillion choices. I have lowered my caloric intake and I'm always within my carb grams per day as suggested by my diabetes Educator. Check it out, it works.

To cmathys2006: Get thee to a Registered Dietitian and fast! The American Diabetes Association (per Standard of Medical Care- 2009) recommends at least 130 g carbohydrates per day, but your RD should provide you with an individual meal plan based upon your specific needs and help you to put these recommendations into practice. Good Luck! a concerned RD.

I have had plain yogurt that I sweeten myself with Splenda and added some fresh fruit like grapes, pineapple, or canned peaches in light syrup or packed in juice. I have added an extra Spenda packet to the light yogurt also to make it taste less sour. I have also had hummus with pita chips. I think I would like to try to pudding with banana slices next time.

I have allways hated the sour taste of yogurt, but recently I finally found a yogurt I can eat without gagging--Kroger-brand Carb Master. If I eat it with some extra fruit it's pretty good. Kroger is a large midwest grocery chain based in Cincinnati. Most of these suggestions already I do eat and enjoy.
