Think Twice Before Eating These Foods
Here at Diabetic Living, we stress over and over the fact that eating with diabetes doesn't have to mean deprivation, starvation, or bland and boring foods. However, that doesn't mean anything goes when it comes to filling your meal plan. Some foods really are best left on the table or in the store. Everyone -- with diabetes or without -- would be wise to avoid or limit the foods on this list because they are high in saturated fat and trans fat, which contribute to heart disease risk. The foods are also high in added sugar, which is an empty source of calories that can lead to weight gain.
If you see some of your favorite foods on this list, don't lose heart: We've picked several healthier options for you to choose from. So you can have your fries and eat them, too, provided they're baked rather than deep-fat fried.
This is a very useful site, with good information, it sounds like there are a lot of people on here that don't know how to use a browser very well and they are blaming it on this site. While this may not be the best designed site on the web, it is far from the worst, and it is still very user friendly if you know what you are doing. It is a very useful tool, just learn how to use it.
8/15/2010 10:31:43 PM Report AbuseHow about a "print only the article and not have to print also the reviews. I can read those, don't need them printed out. Thanks alot. Needed paper and more ink now.
8/10/2010 01:30:47 PM Report Abuseyou have just taken away all the things I like and can afford
8/10/2010 10:00:45 AM Report AbuseThanks for the suggestion to just hit "print all" to see that actual article without all the annoying pop-ups and need to advance the slide. I understand the need to advertise, but there's a real problem when a site punishes those who visit. Until today I've never wasted the time to sift through a whole "article". I do wish I got the sense that the information was written by more than a high school intern with a basic understanding of health and nutrition.
7/6/2010 07:08:50 AM Report AbuseIf you want to keep the slide format, at least give contents and allow a user to pick and chose which ones they are interested in. And as far as the pop-ups go, install google toolbar -- it's free, it auto-fills forms, and it has a great pop-up blocker.
7/3/2010 04:50:09 PM Report AbuseI had no trouble seeing the foods to avoid, you have one popup, close it and just keep hitting NEXT. These are definitely foods to avoid. Fried foods will kill you. You still need to locate your diabetic association and get a list of foods. This magazine is great and has wonderful receipes. They cut fat, carbs and sugars. Check your labels. I look forward to this magazine monthly.
7/2/2010 11:24:10 AM Report AbuseThis magazine is great. The receipes are wonderful. Contact your diabetic organization for a list of foods. Get started right away! The foods are normal foods just less of them. Carbs are killers!
7/2/2010 11:15:02 AM Report AbuseA suggestion for those of you who commented that they didn't like going page by page to read the article (wanting it to all be on the same page): I always go straight to the print all button at the top. It actually doesn't print (unless you then click the print button on your browser), it just puts the whole article on one page without additional popups (usually only one add at the top). Hope this helps...
7/1/2010 11:34:40 AM Report Abusewhat CAN you eat?
6/30/2010 07:53:43 PM Report AbuseI need reminding and this was excellent. I usually don't eat much of what was listed but occasionally I do. "Occasionally" must be rarely or never. But I can't believe companies would make, stores would sell and restaurants would serve such dreadful, unhealthy food. I can choose not to eat it but maybe it shouldn't be so readily available in the first place.
6/29/2010 07:12:05 PM Report AbuseYou have to get rid of the pop ups yourself! Turn them off!
6/29/2010 04:56:20 PM Report AbuseAre you kidding me! Nobody should eat this junk. You will see a less obese country if those with weight problems with stop eating just one of these at a time. Take baby steps. But cut out this garbage. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.
6/29/2010 04:52:55 PM Report AbuseOh yeah I forgot I have low thyroid too plus allergies - plants etc - and I've been dieting for most of my adult life plus even with my bad bones, need for a Jazzy and more aches than I can count --- I'll never give up trying for a better ody -- I walk and aquacize twice a week
6/29/2010 04:37:59 PM Report Abusewow - I've been diabetic for 10 years --- from day 1 I'd never even think of drinking a sugar-filled soda ---- better yet I got off soda entirely a few months ago (mind you I have fibromyalgia, meniere's, extreme osteoarthritis, a fused ankle & wrist, both knees replaced and high blood pressure) and since I dropped the soda for water I feel much better - but I still need to lose 150 emotional lbs
6/29/2010 04:27:32 PM Report AbuseAnonymous: Go to your control panel and change the settings on the display. This will decrease the size and allow you to see the entire page.
6/29/2010 04:22:45 PM Report AbuseI have a 20" screen but all this is to much to show on my monitor. So whats the sense of even having this site if a person can't read all of it.
6/29/2010 02:44:20 PM Report Abusethis webite has a lot of information and helps individuals who are new to diabities, but I hate all those pop-ups
6/29/2010 01:23:35 PM Report AbuseTo Marciar351, sugar substitutes are not dangerous to your health, eating out of moderation IS! If you work on your diet? Then you can have GASP! Sugar. I bake for 5 most people have families....sorry you don't have one. I really don't like the pop ups and the 'advice' is just to get me to come to the site and look at your ad pop ups so really I was hoping for MORE, as I think most of the comments have shown here.
6/29/2010 01:19:36 PM Report AbuseYou r way to far some do not make it far enouch for me ti finish reading!!!
6/29/2010 01:19:32 PM Report AbuseTo those of us newly diagnosed, I'm GLAD they are "dumbed down". Common knowledge for you, anonymous, is brand-new to a lot of us. Donuts bad, veggies good! Yeah, I know THAT, but it's interesting and informative to see the nutrional breakdowns and offered acceptable substitutes.
6/29/2010 01:11:23 PM Report AbuseThis website is obviously run by idiots. The articles are dumb downed and written by people who are clueless about diabetes. This artlicle is common knowledge. To the authors of this article, thanks for wasting my time. This website sucks, too many pop ups, ignorant medical advice, and stupid articles. I will not visit this site again.
6/29/2010 12:40:01 PM Report Abusei also think there are far too many annoying pop ups..i hate comming into the site now. i think i will also be cancelling the newsletters as they tend to be bait to enter the site and endure the torture.
6/29/2010 12:19:43 PM Report AbuseI, too, agree with most replies that your site is way too much! Your recipes are unreal! Most people that bake cakes don't usually need to cook for a block of people, usually only 1-2 people. They are much too troublesome to make and a waste of time. It is also my understanding that a diabetic person is to eliminate most sugars and sugar substitutes are dangerous. Why are your recipes loaded with sugar and substitutes? Dislike all the pop-ups. Sorry, but I am no longer a fan.
6/29/2010 12:17:40 PM Report AbuseI have no problem with pop up ads or surveys. I went in to my "tools" box and blocked pop ups. Have had no surveys come up either. I like these quick articles that come into my email. Good information sometimes. Keep it up!
6/29/2010 12:15:45 PM Report Abusegoing to cancel, articles are not very "deep" and way way too many ads, pop ups, busy areas that are Not content. Waste of a good idea.
6/29/2010 12:04:40 PM Report AbuseAgain, thank you for the information. In hard economic times like this we do understand you need to sell advertising space. I actually look past the ads. Keep up the good work!
6/29/2010 12:03:21 PM Report AbuseYes, I agee practically with everyone. Your site is a mess and I will be cancelling as this iste is a waste of my time due to all the pop up adds, surveys, ridiculous amount of advertising and difficulty in accessing the articles I entered this site to read. You people should be ashamed, you had a good idea and potentially a good service but decided to make huge profits at the expense of sick people looking for information to get well. Goodbye, never to return!
6/29/2010 11:54:58 AM Report AbuseI agree with the comments above.............less selling and mor info would be great. Navagation improvements are needed.
6/29/2010 11:52:36 AM Report AbuseI do agree about finding the list of what is featured, the site needs to be simplified. not so busy. make it easier for us to find the medical info we're actually looking for. not all the ads.
6/29/2010 11:25:30 AM Report AbuseI agree with verde3 and others about your site. Very annoying to use. The number of pop ups sends me into a craze. I end up just closing the site instead of finishing reading the info I had gone onto the site to read. Too many pop ups, too many survey requests, lack of actual medical articles done in an informative way. This isn't HGTV. I go on this site to get updated on research, healthy eatting, stratigic exercises, etc. I am considering canceling my subscription if it doesn't improve.
6/29/2010 11:18:51 AM Report AbuseI very rarely use this website. It takes too long to get to information and I spend too much time closing the pop-ups.
6/29/2010 11:18:10 AM Report AbuseValuable information here but poorly designed. Lots of stuff not related to diabetes or health like photos & other unrelated magazines. Get rid of the excess and PLEASE GET RID OF THESE CONSTANT POP-UP. YOUR DEFEATING YOUR PURPOSE BY MAKING THIS SO FRUSTRATING THAT I 'JUST WANT OFF THE WEBSITE" BECAUSE THESE POP-UPS ARE SO ANNOYING. AND MAKE YOUR LISTS IN LIST FORM TO THEYRE EASY TO READY AND PRING. HELLOW WAKE U P, WE WANT INFORMATION QUICK AND EASY TO GET. ANONYMOUSE WHO WANTS INFO
6/29/2010 11:14:27 AM Report AbusePlease kill the pop-ups!
6/29/2010 11:11:29 AM Report AbuseThe website drives me craxy trying to find The List of whatever you're supposed to be finding. There may be good info here but I'm going crazy trying to find it. I am seriously thinking about Unsubscribing because there is just TOO MUCH STUFF and popups and it takes too long to find anything. All because I asked a simple question which they never did answer. I quess I'm supposed to figure out the answer myself from all this stuff. Verde3
6/29/2010 11:06:12 AM Report AbuseI was so excited when I found your website, and quickly signed up to get the notices - However, that excitement has been beaten into the ground by the terrible design - those pop-ups drive me crazy !! I have NEVER managed to get through to an actual list that I was interested in, because of the never-ending garbage.
6/29/2010 10:57:19 AM Report AbuseThanks for the free info but please don't make us 'search' for the important parts of the article. Keep the list on one page. Makes better sense that way.
6/29/2010 10:55:08 AM Report AbuseHow about killing the popups! I hate those things. Not worth messing with this site. You are sabotaging your own website.
6/29/2010 10:53:14 AM Report AbuseHow about putting the list all together and not make the poor user go thru page after page trying to find the entire list. Lots of wasted space on this site with no room for the actual articles. Really now, how big does the picture of a cookie need to be for me to get the hint that they are not good? And how many options do I really need to subscribe?
6/29/2010 10:51:18 AM Report AbuseI rarely read your newsletter, even though the information is valuable. It just takes too long to download at my slow rural dial-up download speed. I cannot afford the time. Think Before You Eat: 15 Foods to Avoid with Diabetes, takes 3 to 4 minutes to download EACH segment, or a total download time of nearly an hour. Add the reading time, and time spent is well over one hour. It would be better if you would send everything all in one download.
6/29/2010 10:47:30 AM Report AbuseThere are so many pop ups and interruptions on this web site. I get frustrated and exit before I finish reading the articles.
6/29/2010 10:45:06 AM Report AbuseHi, I agree with almost everyone that made all the comments above. I still haven't found the 12 other foods to avoid. Oh well ! As far as the thyroid with diabetes. This is very common. I have been fighting it for 30 yrs now. Insulin adds FAT period. Live with it. I have tried all diets and am on nutrasystem for the second time now. The food has improved and so has my blood sugars. All we have to do is keep trying, there is no other option. Good Luck
6/29/2010 10:44:13 AM Report AbuseI have to agree that the pop-ups on this site drive me crazy. That said I find a lot of good info here. likeafinewine23
6/29/2010 10:35:39 AM Report AbuseI have to agree with the person who was frustrated with this website. There are so many interruptions with pop-ups and it was difficult to actually discern what was the "LIST" and how to find it. mazies
6/29/2010 10:32:28 AM Report Abuse"If you lose weight you might beat diabetes?" At 110 lbs with diabetes how much weight do you propose I lose? It's genetic for some....while you might have meant well, not EVERYONE who has diabetes is overweight and not everyone who gets it is....
6/29/2010 10:29:34 AM Report AbuseI highly recommend counting carbs. You can regulate your insulin better. Diet and exercise are also very important staples in your life.
6/29/2010 10:29:17 AM Report AbuseEveryone is always suggesting to lose weight, and I want to, but I also have thyroid and this makes it so hard for me. I do watch what I eat most of the time might lose a few lbs, but that is all. I need to lose at least 25 to 30 lbs to make a difference. Does anyone have any suggestions what diet is better or easier to do for a diabetic? Thanks:)
6/29/2010 10:27:54 AM Report Abusemltdebbie: It is frustrating to me as a diabetes educator to hear about folks who are working really hard at eating healthier and doing everything they are told only to find that they are either on the wrong medication or on the wrong dosage for their needs. Please, please don't give up on yourself! Get an appointment with a diabetes educator and have them evaluate your situation-- you may have to either add a medication or change to a new one to get the control you deserve.
6/29/2010 10:25:40 AM Report AbuseI lost 120 lbs, take metformin and watch carbs but my average blood sugar is still 272...tired of dealing with it
6/29/2010 10:19:38 AM Report AbuseBetter get this in quick, because except for smoothies and purchased juice drinks, these are all my favorites! Of course, I don't eat all of them every day, and neither does anybody else. So I'll think twice (which I already do) and eat them OCCASIONALLY anyway. Eat super healthy, live 20 more years to eat super healthy to live 5 more years. A little happiness sometimes helps.
6/29/2010 10:18:55 AM Report Abusederekc189 - Losing weight is always a good idea if you are overweight and unhealthy BUT Type 1 Diabetes cannot be cured by losing weight. I like the substitutions offered to these foods. Thank you!
6/29/2010 10:17:40 AM Report AbuseWhere is the LIST ...just the list? This is the messiest and most aggravating website. I think this is the reason I just delete the newsletter, and ignore this ''website''...it has little info and what there is one has to jump through hoops to get to it. Not worth the trouble.
6/29/2010 10:15:45 AM Report AbuseIt is "lose the weight" not "loose the weight."
6/29/2010 10:15:05 AM Report AbuseModeration is always the key. The occasional donut or slice of cakeis not going to kill you, but occasional doesn't mean every other day. :0)
6/29/2010 10:09:58 AM Report AbuseYou make diabetes sound like a death sentence. I have been a diabetic 38 years, gave birth to 3 children and have yet to have diabetic retinopathy. My blood sugars have not always been perfect but I do monitor my sugars closely. You can eat a donut every once and awhile and also a piece of pizza. Do all in moderation and pray daily.
6/29/2010 10:06:38 AM Report AbuseThe sentence read "However, there are some items that should be off everybody¿s list¿whether you have diabetes or not." so this is NOT just a weak excuse to advertise. It's smart advice for Everyone, not just diagnosed diabetics.
6/29/2010 10:06:24 AM Report AbuseIf you loose weight, you might beat diabeties.
6/29/2010 10:06:19 AM Report AbuseStop the popups
6/29/2010 10:04:40 AM Report AbuseI would be interested too, but I live in Mexico
6/29/2010 09:56:55 AM Report AbuseYou can't have cookies, cake, pie and milkshakes if you are diabetic? This is just a weak excuse to ADVERTISE.
6/29/2010 09:56:28 AM Report AbuseA list and no pictures would help me out.
6/29/2010 09:51:53 AM Report Abuseclick print all above the show and it will print all the slides for you!
6/29/2010 09:50:26 AM Report AbuseI agree...please stio tge slide shows
6/29/2010 09:50:15 AM Report AbusePlease do away with the slide shows. This is something I would love to print this out as a reminder for myself and put it on the fridge but it is too much of a waste of time to keep clicking next....
6/29/2010 09:47:20 AM Report AbuseI'm interested but i leave here in canada.
6/29/2010 09:46:48 AM Report Abuseit is interesting, but whats up with the slide thing, annoying
6/29/2010 09:43:23 AM Report AbuseNeeds an e-mailable list, please.
6/6/2010 06:49:52 PM Report AbuseI agree with everyone. I gave up too.
6/1/2010 08:37:50 PM Report AbusePLEASE CHANGE TO A LIST, TOO MUCH TIME, TOO MUCH COMPUTER ENERGY, THANKS, B
6/1/2010 06:59:06 PM Report AbuseThe slides drive me crazy too. If you click "print all" right above the subject, it opens one page with all of the slides on it and you can view it that way. Much easier to read and you do not have to print out.
6/1/2010 01:49:39 PM Report AbuseI hate the slide presentation too! I usually give up before I finish looking at all the info because it takes FOREVER!
6/1/2010 10:54:19 AM Report AbuseIs anyone listening? We keep saying the same thing over and over--the slides takes entirely too much time to maneuver through.
5/26/2010 03:59:50 PM Report AbuseI agree with everyone else about the slides. I would have much rather just read it as an article. I know what all the foods look like, so why the big pictures?
5/22/2010 09:55:48 AM Report AbuseThe slides take up too much time = change to regular pages!!
5/15/2010 12:06:19 AM Report AbuseI agree...cut the slide presentation! It takes forever to get the information.
5/13/2010 12:03:48 PM Report AbuseAdd me to the group that doesn't like the slide presentation. I'd like to see the list and pick what I want to learn more about. Same is true for your articles!
5/10/2010 01:49:09 PM Report AbuseI would like to read the article, but I too back out of the slides by the 4th or 5th one.
5/8/2010 10:11:16 PM Report AbuseI agree - get rid of the slides. I lose interest by the third or fourth one.
4/27/2010 10:00:01 AM Report AbuseWhy can't you do away with the slides and put info on on or two pages. I get tired of going from side to slide, the having to go through then all agin to return to the home page. I site is almost a waste of time and it takes too long.
4/26/2010 10:31:57 AM Report Abuseanniejones 99 -- It IS tough to stay motivated to eat well! However, find something that means something to you. I have two beautiful young children that I want to see grow up (& be healthy doing it). I have family members that went from prediabetic (like me) to diabetes, complications, etc. That's a pretty good motivator to avoid what I don't want. Find a yummy alternative. Oven sweet potato "fries" are great & feel like cheating. If you must have chocolate, get 85% dark which has less sugar...
4/6/2010 01:47:44 PM Report AbuseI cant get motivated... how did you get motivated....I know the consequences...
3/30/2010 07:13:35 PM Report AbuseI adopted a high fat/medium protein/low carb lifestyle 3 years ago. Lost 65 pounds and kept it off, off all diabetes related meds, feel better at 52 than I did at 32. I'm sorry, but I totally disagree with some of the advise for diabetics that I see on here. A snack with 15-20g carbs? I limit my carb intake to 30g a day. Check out my website for truly low carb recipes and my blog at www.ourlowcarblife.com
3/25/2010 05:22:03 PM Report AbuseWhat the heck happened to "anonymous"? Are you okay???
3/16/2010 10:46:50 AM Report AbuseI was diagnosed in late October and went from 156 to 130 doing nothing.I am skin and bones and starving to death.
2/21/2010 07:10:29 PM Report AbuseMy diabetes educator said that regular soft drinks of any brand are like poison to diabetics... it raises blood sugar far too much (even in moderation) and should only be consumed in small amounts (2 ozs)when blood sugar drops to low.
2/16/2010 01:38:05 PM Report Abusemaude24 i would try walking everyday at least a half hour plus count your carbs .iwas first diagnosed this past sept 09 and my sugar was 343mg/dl its now down to 150mg/dl avg. losing weight also willhelp you a lot. my goal is to be off my meds by april and tobe 20lbs lighter. good luck
2/16/2010 01:36:53 PM Report AbuseAll in moderation gett of the couch and exercise, i have been controling my blood sugars much better eating smaller portions-splitting burgers with my husband and instead of fries adding fruits and veggies to the mix. i have lost 28# so far in the past 4 months including the holidays! I still have my Pepsi daily just alot less of it, i used to drink a liter or more a day and now drink 8 - 12 oz and manage it with my exercise. I know if i want that treat daily i have to move off the couch!!
2/16/2010 10:36:03 AM Report AbuseIf food has 5 or more grams of fiber, subtract the total grams of fiber from the total carbohydrate before using the conversion guide.
1/7/2010 07:20:49 PM Report AbuseI was told that if you use food high in fiber that you can subtract that number from the carb count for a true count. Is this true?
1/7/2010 07:05:25 AM Report Abusemaude24 I've had Type 2 for 15 yrs but in the last 2yrs have been on insulin, it's hard to control your diet being on a 30/70 insulin because you have to eat so the long acting part will be in your body, yet if you don't eat much you go low, and the weight gain goes on because no matter what you do you can't win---I'm exasperated!!
1/5/2010 01:43:31 PM Report AbuseOf all the foods listed< I only ocassionally have a slice of cake or pizza. I have always been active and weigh 123 pounds. Yet last year I was diagnosed with type 2. I am a vegetarian and have been for 37 years. So I am struggling with just what I can eat. articles like this are a help. Barbara
1/5/2010 10:26:55 AM Report AbuseI have been fighting high blood sugar for 2 years now. It is nice to have a breakdown of the most avoidable foods and why. I hate the fact that I have to deal with this and the fact that I have not done well either. I prepare most of the foods that I eat and still find my numbers high. It is nice to have the support of this website
1/3/2010 08:56:36 PM Report AbuseI like others need help on what foods we should eat regularly?
12/30/2009 11:08:29 PM Report AbuseI love doctors that will give you a script and tell you nothing! I have begged for education with no response.
12/30/2009 04:43:29 PM Report AbuseTo aswashing: of course, it's a blow to find out you have diabetes. You can, however, live a fun, healthy life with it. I was diagnosed with Type 1 when I was 13 and have been living well with it for more years than I'm going to admit on an open forum! With four shots a day, a diet that has become second-nature and a good outlook, I find that life is what it is -- and I'm in control. Good luck to you -- I hope you have good support and I know you'll find your balance.
12/30/2009 01:06:32 PM Report AbuseI just found out I have diabetes and it sucks, because all the good foods are not good foods anymore!
12/22/2009 03:59:47 PM Report AbuseWell I just looked at the list of foods to avoid, and of course everything I like the most is there. I have no wonder now why I weigh what I do and how I got there. I truly should have done and known better. Both my parents are diabetic, and now my brother who is a health enthusist joins the list with us. . I was given a diabetic diet several weeks ago and I am making far better choices of what to eat and what to avoid. I will be looking for recipes on this site to help with meal planning.
11/23/2009 10:56:43 AM Report Abusei just got diagnosed with diabetes. i have no clue how to eat or prepare meals. i am excited to get this mag.
11/4/2009 05:39:14 PM Report Abuse
