Asparagus
If you love asparagus, you'll really love that it's a nonstarchy vegetable with only 5 grams of carb per serving and nearly 2 grams of dietary fiber. It is also high in the B vitamin folate, vitamin C, and a health-promoting antioxidant called glutathione, says Jeannette Jordan, MS, RD, CDE, a Charleston, South Carolina-based registered dietitian and advisory board member for Diabetic Living. Glutathione may help boost the immune system and promote lung health by protecting against viruses.
The cardiovascular benefits of folate and other B vitamins have been studied in relation to homocysteine, an amino acid in the blood that has been linked to a higher risk of coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends including foods containing folate and other B vitamins in your diet to help lower homocysteine levels.
A serving of asparagus is 1/2 cup, or 4 ounces cooked, and provides 33 percent of the daily recommendation of 400 micrograms of folate, according to the FDA.

Carrots have a hi sugar content and I don't eat them as much. Low fat is important, but not as much as low carb & hi-fiber. Walking will take the edge off of hunger for me. Sugar feeds cancer and doesn't help the diabetic.

So this article was a real service. Being a diabetic can make you feel so deprived - I love ice cream, cheesecake and pies plus German chocolate cake. But with the foods you've offered, I can live very easily without any of the so-called "bad" foods, including the ones I listed above.

A standard pack of playing cards with "healthy and happy" written on it next to the plate. Also, what size plate is used in all your displays would be helpful. I'm here to learn. I'm a visual person. TEACH ME like you would a child!

I couldn't get into Diabetic classes, because they won't provide me interpreters. SO I did everything on my own and discovered a way to keep my sugar levels below 130. CINNAMON! ! ! I lost 60 lbs since March of 2009 and surprised my doctor!

I currently take byetta and meformin but I wasn't cursed with the side affects. I have lost about 55 lbs. over the last 6 years. Due to other health issues I need to lose about another 40ish lbs. What I have learned is that I can have A cookie not the whole box.

He is starting me out on 1 a day for a week then 2 then 3 then 4. He said there was no way my body could handle all at once. My main problem is my husband!! It is like nothing is wrong. My dad is a diabetic in fact this thing runs rampant though both sides of my family tree. (lucky me). Thanks for the encouraging words though. It is nice to talk to people who understand. Deedee

I also had a really rough start, unhelpful dr's visits until I finally found one who I could work with, and lots of blood glucose bumps until I sorted out what works for me. Tons of diarrhea from metformin - but now it's all solved and I feel I can live my life with ease. I hope you perservere until you find the help you need. This is still my best source of information. While there are some reliable sources for diabetes care on the internet (and many, many who are not so current or reliable), you still should be educated by a Registered Dietitian or other Certified Diabetes Educator for your specific circumstances (check with your local hospital for programs). There are no foods that are "forbidden" but you should learn how much YOU need to eat. Very few people can do this on their own.

2/16/2010 11:13:27 AM Report AbuseAs a type 2 I put vegetables and nuts in plain yogurt.avocado, sweet yellow bellpepper, tomatoes, cucumber and/or pecans or walnuts also a little olive oil.It satifies all your taste buds and doesn't make you crave foods inbetween meals.As a type 2 I really have to get creative for my own taste buds.bake your salmon (double foil top and bottom) fork it then squeeze lemon juice or spicier put some olive oil then cajun powder, cook at 325 for about 35 minutes for two servings.

2/16/2010 10:33:35 AM Report AbuseProtein is an important nutrient the body needs to repair muscle tissure.Please have him contact his physician whose nurse should be able to provide him with the proper information or ask the doctor about scheduling an appoint with a Registered Dietician who can provide him with the proper dietary guidelines that pertain to his illness, lifestyle, ability to eat etc... Different cancer patients have different nutritional needs. Also liquid supplements may be an option.

He feels so bad all the time, what can I do? I try not to have left overs, but most recipes are for more than 2. (They also use stuff I can't afford) Any suggestions for my part, or is it only up to him?
