Stabilize Blood Glucose with Oats
Oats are warm and comforting -- and good for you, too. They've grabbed banner headlines for their heart-healthy goodness, but did you know oats also help stabilize blood glucose?
Look on the Labels
Eating oats and other fiber-rich foods for breakfast appears to help keep blood glucose under control throughout the day.
When shopping for oat products, look for heart-health claims on the label. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration allows oat products containing 3 or more grams of soluble fiber per serving to make one of these two health claims:
- "Soluble fiber from oatmeal, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease."
- "Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 3 grams of soluble fiber from whole oats per day may reduce the risk of heart disease."

2/23/2010 03:23:32 PM Report AbuseBuddy D...perhaps it is the quantity you are eating. I had the same problem until I changed my eating style a bit. I fix 4 oz. of steel cut oats and add 1/4 c. walnuts, 1 tsp. cocoa, 1 tsp. cinnamon, and a tinch of soymilk. I always warm it up in the microwave...then, I eat half of this. I put the rest in a small container, and throughout the morning I eat the rest. My readings stay under 100 this way. You might try it.
