Diabetes Treatment: Guide to Oral Diabetes Medications

sulfonylureas

Sulfonylureas

Generic Names: glyburide, glipizide, glimepuride

Trade Names: Glynase Prestabs, Diabeta, Micronase, Glucotrol, Amaryl

How It Works: These drugs stimulate the pancreas to secrete, or put out, more insulin, which decreases the amount of glucose in your blood.

Side Effects: Can include nausea, hypoglycemia, heartburn, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and constipation. You may also notice some weight gain. This might be related to better control of blood glucose or increased food intake due to hunger. Most physicians start treatment at a low dose, then increase the dose gradually to keep blood glucose stable and minimize side effects. Let your physician know if you're experiencing continuing side effects or if you're allergic to sulfa drugs.

Take Note: Sulfonylureas may cause you to be more sensitive to the sun's rays, so wear a hat and use protective sunscreen when outdoors. It's also a good idea to increase your activity level to counteract the weight gain.

Can you mail order medicines from there or get them from the Pharmaceutical Company? That is where I get mine but it will depend on the laws of the land where you are.

After moving to The Philippines to semi retire, I find it impossible to be able to afford the type 2 diabetes medication for my condition. I came from UK and had to stop the treatment as I could no longer pay for the pills. What should I do? Can life go on without prescribed medication based on diet and exercise alone?
