The Health Benefits of Gardening

Whether you garden to savor the visual appeal of flowers, shrubs, and trees, or to relish the sun-ripened flavors of homegrown produce, digging in the dirt yields benefits for body and spirit.

Gardening

For people with diabetes, gardening promises healthful meals made from homegrown vegetables, fruits, and herbs. It also provides an excuse to get outside and exercise, even if gardening doesn't seem like a traditional "workout." Plus gardening offers a measure of solitude and peace, which helps relieve some of the stresses of life in general and living with diabetes in particular.

"Gardening shifts your focus away from illness and helps you look forward from year to year," says Laura Coar, an avid gardener who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1983.
